Our client is seeking an MSP Sales Engineer for a contract to hire scenario. The Sales Engineer focuses on pre-sales discovery, solution design, and technical scoping to help our sales team and vCIO deliver the right solutions to clients. • Performance input: The Project Manager leads performance reviews and incorporates structured feedback from the Sales team and vCIO supported by this role.
Outcomes and Success Measures (First 6-12 Months)
  • Accurate scopes and quotes: Labor estimates are typically within plus/minus 10-15% of actual labor hours after ramp, with a stretch goal of plus/minus 10%.
  • Fewer change orders: Reduced change orders caused by incomplete discovery, scope gaps, or missing requirements.
  • Standardized designs/templates: Improved consistency and adoption of standardized design patterns and documentation templates across project delivery.
  • Clean project handoffs: Projects can be executed without re-discovery due to complete, clear, and actionable handoff documentation.
  • Quote turnaround: Small quotes (defined as?20 labor hours, no migrations, minimal discovery) delivered in 3–4 business days; larger quotes ( >20 labor hours and/or migrations, multi-site complexity, or non-standard designs) delivered in 5–15 business days.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Client Discovery and Consultation
  • Work with Sales and vCIO to conduct discovery with prospective and existing clients to understand needs, pain points, constraints, and priorities.
  • Translate business requirements into technical requirements and recommended solutions.
  • Support sales activities including technical conversations, demos, and presentations as needed.
Solution Design and Technical Standards
  • Design supportable solutions with an emphasis on security, standardization, and maintainability.
  • Stay current on relevant technology changes and industry trends to provide informed recommendations to Sales and vCIO.
  • Incorporate automation into project designs wherever feasible to improve efficiency and streamline workflows.
Scoping, Estimating, and Quoting
  • Produce clear scopes of work including assumptions, dependencies, risks, constraints, and out-of-scope items.
  • Create accurate labor estimates and support quoting, including BOM/licensing and required client inputs.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, vCIO, Tech Lead, Project Manager, and other internal stakeholders to define scope and technology for internal initiatives when needed.
Documentation and Project Handoffs
  • Create and maintain standardized templates for project workplans, project documentation, and design deliverables.
  • Ensure handoffs to the Project Manager, Tech Lead, and Infrastructure Engineers are complete and actionable, including design/architecture, scope, estimates, BOM/licensing, assumptions, dependencies, risks, and required client inputs.
Internal Enablement and Training
  • Train Infrastructure Engineers on using templates and standards for project workplans and project documentation.
  • Train and support Infrastructure Engineers on quoting standards, required discovery inputs, common quoting pitfalls, and estimating best practices.
  • Contribute to internal process improvements that increase consistency and delivery outcomes.
Secondary / Occasional Responsibilities (Small-Team Reality)
  • Assist with implementation, migration, or troubleshooting of solutions designed by this role when business needs require it.
  • Hands-on work is intended to support delivery and should typically be limited to 5-8 hours per week (approximately 10-20% of a 40-hour week), not as the primary delivery owner.
  • Support internal process development, documentation, and deployment as needed.
  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of experience in an MSP or comparable IT environment supporting multiple client environments, projects, and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience performing discovery, scoping, estimating, and presenting technical solutions.
  • Strong Microsoft 365 experience, including Entra ID, Intune, Autopilot, Defender, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Strong networking fundamentals and troubleshooting experience (routing/switching concepts, VLANs, firewall concepts, diagnostics).
  • Strong documentation skills: ability to create clear scopes, assumptions, and handoff-ready technical documentation.
  • Strong client-facing communication and professionalism.
  • High attention to detail and ownership of deliverables.
  • Collaborative mindset; works effectively across Sales, vCIO, PM, and engineering teams.
  • Strong time management with the ability to manage multiple concurrent requests.
  • Azure cloud experience (core services and identity/integration patterns).
  • Scripting/programming experience and comfort with automation tooling.
